Did You Know?
Our presentation is on sugar and caffeine. It is based around a "Did You Know" format. We hope that after you read about the effects that you think twice about drinking drinks full of sugar and caffeine. If you go to Bettendorf Middle School, then be sure to look at our display case in front of the cafeteria.

According to Laurent Matt, a doctor,
Caffeine is dangerous if you have a lot.
A high amount of caffeine is one gram.
Dangerous things happen if you have that much like, anxiety, insomnia, disrupted heart beat, and poor digestion.
If you have one and a half grams then agitation, anxiety or muscle tremors appear.
You can lethally over dose on caffeine if it is over ten grams.

A main effect of withdrawal is headache. An inability of sleep depends on the person and how much caffeine the take in.
In Sweden and Denmark Red Bull is illegal because of its side effects.

Sugar
Excessive intake of sugar can cause obesity.
People who drink more then three or more sugary soda daily have a 62% more dental decay, fillings and tooth loss.
One can of regular soda contains the maximum recommended intake of sugar a day.
Sugar can contribute to hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, concentration difficulties, and crankiness in children.
Sugar can affect the immune system; it makes white blood cells sluggish, lowing the resistance to disease.
Too much sugar can cause fatigue and increased hyperactivity. Eight percent of daily calories are the daily recommended allowance of sugar.

The average American consumes two to three pounds of sugar each week.
In the last 20 years, we have increased sugar consumption from 26 pounds a year to 135 pounds.
Soda is the most popular drink consumed in the United States.
The average soda has about 56 grams of sugar in 16 ounces.
The average has diet soda has no sugar but many added sweeteners can be harmful
Gatorade has 26 grams of sugar in eight ounces.
An energy drink has around 56 grams of sugar.
